The LMU women's water polo team will conclude the 2010 regular season with a pair of home games this weekend, starting with No. 13 UC Irvine on Friday, April 16 at 3 p.m. They will then close with Pomona-Pitzer on Senior Day, Sunday, April 18 at 12 noon. It will be the final home game for four seniors - Anne Scott, Carrie Kosnik, Eliana Arellano and Meghan Moore.
INSIDE THE LIONS
With wins at the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara last weekend, the Lions improved to 22-4 on the season, reaching at least 20 wins for the 10th straight year. This season the Lions have posted a program-record 14-game win streak and are a perfect 8-0 against WWPA foes. The Lions have won 21 straight against the WWPA. It all started this season when LMU opened the season scoring 57 goals, the most in program history through four games, to start the season 4-0. The previous high was 41 set in 2005, the same year they set the program for goals in a season with 379. The Lions won the Triton Invitational title for the fifth time, playing in the tournament every year since 2002 and winning it in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Lions have been getting balance this season with seven players with 24 or more goals. Senior Anne Scott leads the Lions with 48 goal, while sophomore Kimberly Benedetti is right behind with 41. Junior Mary Ann Campos scored 10 goals last week and has 39 on the year. Sophomore Casey Flacks ran her total to 29 on the season after scoring 15 the last two weeks. Freshman Erin Manke and junior Diana Romero have 26 each while junior Daisy Carillo has 24. Kristine Cato, a transfer from USC, has been stellar in anchoring the Lions' defense, making 260 saves while allowing just 6.41 goals per game (which is the best in the nation among goalies with more than 500 minutes played on the season).
SENIOR DAY
The game against Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday will be the final home game for seniors Anne Scott, Carrie Kosnik, Eliana Arellano and Meghan Moore. Entering the weekend, Scott ranks 11th all-time in LMU history wih 106 goals. She has added 49 assists, which is ranked 10th, 31 kickouts drawn, 71 steals and 13 field blocks. She went on to earn WWPA Newcomer of the Year in 2009 after transferring to LMU. Carrie Kosnik enters the week having played in 94 games, the most among any Lion on this year's roster. She has 35 goals, seven assists, 35 kickouts drawn, 36 steals and seven field blocks. Arellano has played in goal for the Lions in 73 goals, ranking in the top in saves with 392, and in goals against average, posting a 7.35 heading into the week. Moore has been one of the Lions' most active players. She has played in 35 games as a Lion while also becoming heavily active in LMU's SAAC program and earning national academic honors the last three seasons.
