Results

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's tennis team played in the second annual Betty Werner Cup today in honor of Betty Werner, the late LMU Senior Associate Athletics Director who lost her battle with cancer in August 2008. LMU defeated Dartmouth College 4-3 for the win with stellar play from Lopez/Sauer and Maggi/Malet in doubles and Lopez, Bazula and Maggi in singles play. The Lions are now 7-8 overall on the season.

In single play, the Lions claimed three wins over Dartmouth. On court one Ivan Lopez defeated Dan Freeman of Dartmouth 6-0, 6-1. Lopez now extends his winning record to 10-5 in singles with wins in six of his last seven contests. Geza Bazula added another point for the Lions with a win over Curtis Roby of Dartmouth 6-3, 6-4. With this win, Bazula has 6-3 overall singles record and back-to-back wins going into the weekend. Senior Renzo Maggi added the final singles point for the Lions defeating Xander Centenari 6-4, 6-3. Maggi is now an even 7-7 in singles play with wins in three of his last four matches. In other singles play, Chris Ho of Dartmouth defeated Johan Berhof 6-2, 6-3 while Dartmouth's Jeff Friedman defeated Aris Andreasian 6-3, 6-3 on court six. On court two back and forth battle, Borja Malet dropped the final set to Michael Laser 6-4, 6-7, 10-7.

In doubles play the Lions were able to clinch the doubles point with wins from Lopez/Sauer and Maggi/Malet. On court one, once again top Lions Ivan Lopez and Otto Sauer proved to be one of the top doubles combinations in the west with a win over Freeman/Laser 8-6 and extending their overall record to 10-5 this season. Lopez and Sauer are now undefeated over the last five contests. On court two seniors Renzo Maggi and Borja Malet were reunited after five matches for doubles play. The duo was able to come out with a win over Chatellus/Ho of Dartmouth 8-0. On court three Jack Zapala and Nick Von Der Ahe were unable to hold off Schlobohm/Roby of Dartmouth 8-5.

Next up, the Lions will play BYU on Saturday March 27th at 9:30 am at the LMU Tennis Center.
