The LMU swimming team hit the water on Saturday in a double-dual meet against Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Baptist. The Lions defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 151-128, and edged Cal Baptist, 146-145. Isabella Zhang and Rachel Dekar both won individual races, and along with Sophie Allen and Carolyn Pasque, the foursome won both the 200 medley relay to start off the meet and the 400 freestyle relay to end competition.
Allen, Dekar, Zhang and Pasque combined for a time of 1:48.94 in the 200 medley relay to claim first place, followed by Cal Baptist and Cal State Bakersfield. The Lions placed a pair of swimmers in the top-three of the 1,000 freestyle, as Mary Kate Short (10:59.28) and Terry Rinder (11:01.24) finished second and third, respectively, behind Cal State Bakersfield's Chelsea Ankeny at 10:52.35.
Zhang picked-up her individual victory in the 200 freestyle, posting a mark of 1:58.20, narrowly-edging Bakersfield's Brooke Penney at 1:58.77. Allen placed second in the 100 backstroke one event later, just missing a sub-minute time at 1:00.37. Mary Hanson of Cal Baptist won the race at 57.60.
Dekar stopped the clock at 1:06.83 to claim second place in the 100 breaststroke behind Bakersfield's Rachel McCall (1:06.51). The Lions picked-up valuable points in the 200 butterfly, claiming second and third, as Katie Carmody (2:12.44) and Angelina Prat (2:13.98) finished in those spots behind Cal Baptist's Adriana Quezada (2:09.34).
Pasque cracked the top-three in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.66, good for third, while she and Zhang claimed two of the top-three spots in the 100 freestyle. McCall took first in 52.56, followed by Zhang in second at 53.10, and Pasque in third with a time of 54.47.
Tammy Choy nearly took second place in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:10.57 for third behind Hannah Braun of Cal Baptist at 2:10.54. CSUB's Stephanie Donnelly won the event at 2:09.84. Dekar won her individual event one race later, earning the top spot in the 200 breaststroke at 2:25.95.
Yvonne Le took a close third in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:00.19 behind Donnelly in second at 1:00.13. Quezada won her second event for Cal Baptist, taking first in 59.74. Choy found herself in the top-three for the second time on Saturday in the 400 individual medley, placing second in a time of 4:38.04. Cal Baptist's Norra Stroh (4:36.71) and Braun (4:39.81) took first and third, respectively.
The Lions closed the dual meet with a victory, as Dekar, Pasque, Allen and Zhang combined for a time of 3:35.68 in the 400 freestyle relay to ensure the LMU victory over both Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Baptist.
LMU will return home after the holidays to host MPSF member Northern Colorado on January 4 at 10:30 a.m. That dual meet is the only home meet scheduled for the Lions this year.
