NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - LMU's varsity 8 boat turned in an excellent showing in Sunday's Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, placing sixth out of 15 boats in the annual fall tune-up. The Lions outpaced many rivals, including UC Irvine and Long Beach State.
LMU sent out a veteran lineup that featured one freshman, one sophomores, four juniors, and two seniors and that experience showed as the Lions lowered their time from last year's race by more than a minute. The Lions crossed the line in 15:48.72, topping their race time of 17:11.788. That put them solidly in sixth place out of the 15-boat field, trailing the two UCLA boats plus the "A" crews from Stanford, San Diego State, and San Diego.
The Lions will return to training before picking up the spring schedule in March. The Lions open up 2011 on March 5 against UCLA on Ballona Creek.
