DAVIS, Calif. - In a battle between the top two teams in the Western Water Polo Association, LMU's defense showed up in a big way as they claimed a 6-1 victory over previously unbeaten UC Davis at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday night.
Playing a ranked opponent for the second time in 24 hours, the Lions took huge strides in making claim to the number one seed in the upcoming WWPA Championship as they improve to 14-8 on the year and 12-1 in the WWPA. In the process, the Lions gave the 13th-ranked Aggies their first conference loss, falling to 12-1 in the WWPA and 15-8 overall.
LMU's success under Head Coach John Loughran has come from defense, and it showed why in getting a big road win. The Lions allowed just one goal in the second period and turned away a penalty shot in the process.
The Lions offense responded early as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead, all coming after exclusions. Edgaras Asajavicius scored on a pair of first quarter 6-on-5 opportunities and Robert Pusic added another for a 3-0 first quarter lead. Derek Milligan then added a five-meter goal for a 4-0 lead.
UC Davis finally got on the board with 1:42 left in the half.
That would be it for the Aggies as Jon Colton would add a goal in the third followed by a goal from Brian Flacks for the five-goal margin.
The Lions will finish their three-game stretch on Saturday when they take on No. 11 Santa Clara at 1 p.m.
