LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU swim team faced tough competition on Friday afternoon, entering the water against UCLA and UC Davis in a double-dual format. The Lions, who joined the strong Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this year in swimming, dropped decisions to both UCLA and UC Davis.
In LMU's best performance of the day, senior Isabella Zhang finished second overall in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 24.25. UCLA's Ting Quah narrowly edged Zhang with a time of 24.23 to win the sprint.
The Lions finished fourth overall in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Tammy Choy, Rachel Dekar, Zhang and Carolyn Pasque combined for a time of 1:47.65. UCLA, which defeated both LMU and UC Davis in the scoring, posted the best time at 1:43.68.
Freshman Mary Kate Short had the Lions' best time in the 1000 freestyle at 10:49.89, while Terry Rinder placed fifth overall in 11:02.31. Tammy Choy was LMU's top finisher in the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock at 2:01.01, followed shortly thereafter by teammate Christina Cannata at 2:01.02.
Dempsey Haynosch officially posted a time of 1:01.14 in the 100 backstroke, while Dekar was the first to finish for the Lions in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.61, good for fifth overall. Freshman Angelina Pratt managed a time of 2:10.45 in the 200 butterfly to finish seventh overall and first amongst the Lions.
Zhang returned to the water once again in the 100 freestyle, finishing fifth in terms of time with a mark of 52.65. Pasque followed in a time of 52.97, while Quah won the event in 51.96.
Noelani Vargas' time of 2:15.07 edged teammate Haynosch at 2:15.85 for the Lions' best time in the 200 backstroke, while Dekar won third place points in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:22.74.
Prat once again led the Lions in a race, this time finishing fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:19.63. Choy's time of 1:00.29 in the 100 butterfly placed fourth in the race, as UCLA's Christofferson won the event in 55.96, while Choy's mark of 2:10.97 in the 200 IM was good enough for third overall.
The Lions finished the day with a swim in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Zhang, Pasque, Prat and Haynosch teamed to stop the clock in 3:39.07. When all was said and done, LMU dropped the meet against UC Davis, 217-76, and to UCLA, 171.5-100.5.
