LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 2009 alumnae meet saw a group of former Lions top two sets of 11 current Lion swimmers at the Burns Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. The alumnae finished with 40 points, followed by the navy squad with 38 and crimson with 29. The day featured six events, as the alumnae claimed the top spot in three. The former Lions did have a bit of an advantage, as they swam traditional 200 relays with four swimmers, while the current teams could only swim three players, with the fourth forced to race a full 100.
The alumnae came out strong in the first race, claiming the top spot in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.30 to claim the nine points. Crimson, represented by Noelani Vargas, Camille Hopp, Mallorie Lim and Anne Scott, took four points with a second-place finish, touching the wall in 1:52.50. The alumnae also placed a team in third for three points, followed by navy in fourth and fifth, earning two and one point, respectively.
Navy got things rolling from there, winning the next two events, the 200 butterfly and the 200 backstroke. Isabella Zhang, Yvonne Le and Katie Carmody teamed to finish the butterfly event with a time of 1:55.73. Carmody alone swam half of the race, guiding the team to victory. The alumnae were not far behind in that race, touching the wall in 1:55.90 for second. Alicia Witter, Dempsey Haynosch and Tammy Choy won the 200 backstroke, turning in a time of 1:58.30. Representing the crimson team, Vargas, Kia Dobie and Terry Rinder combined to post a mark of 2:00.56 for second in the backstroke.
The alumnae did well down the stretch, winning two of the final three races to claim victory. The former Lions won the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.62 before taking the final race of the day, the 200 individual medley relay, in 2:01.37. Melanie Tansuwan, Choy and Stephanie Hess took second in the breaststroke at 2:17.89. Crimson and navy finished 1-2 in the 200 freestyle, as the team of Carolyn Pasque, Hopp and Scott just out-touched Zhang, Alexa Cook and Witter, 1:43.87 to 1:44.56. After the alumnae took first in the 200 individual medley, Le, Tansuwan and Choy helped navy ensure a second-place finish with a time of 2:02.61.
With a little friendly competition under its belt, LMU will begin its season on October 9 at the PCSC Relays in Clovis, Calif.
