Los Angeles - Senior Lacey Bartels scored in the 57th minute and senior Allyssa Clark recorded her fifth shutout of the season with nine saves, including one off of a penalty, as LMU upset #26 Missouri 1-0 on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the UCLA Women's Cup in Westwood. The win snaps the Lions' (5-3-0) losing streak at two games while giving the program its first win over a ranked opponent since 2006 in their first meeting with the Tigers (4-3-1).
In the Lions' first game against a ranked team this season, the Lions were out-shot 22-5 but made the most of their chances. After a scoreless first half, Bartels converted the first of two LMU chances in the second half. Junior Julie Gallaudet crossed from the right for Bartels to head home for her first goal of the season. The assist was Gallaudet's team-leading fifth of the season and 10th of her career while Bartels scored her seventh career goal, most among active Lions.
Clark and the LMU defense were the stars. After Missouri hit the post in the first half, the Tigers had a golden chance to equalize in the second when they were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute. Up stepped Alysha Bonnick but Clark won the battle, saving the spot kick to preserve the lead.
Missouri kept pushing forward but Clark pulled off two more saves and the Lion defense blocked one to give LMU its first win over a ranked team since beating then-#16 USC on September 24, 2006.
Clark, who made a career-high 11 saves in LMU's last outing, followed it up with nine saves to increase her WCC-leading total to 43. Tasha Dittamore stopped two shots for the Tigers, who held a 22-5 shot advantage. In addition to the save lead, Clark also recorded her WCC-leading fifth shutout of the season, tying her for ninth on the LMU single-season chart. It was also the 13th shutout of her career and 15th career victory, moving her into fourth place on the school's all-time list.
LMU will head back to Westwood on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest against Utah.
