La Jolla, CA - The 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount women's water polo team earned third place in the 2009 UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Sunday in La Jolla, Calif. The Lions fell to No. 9 UC Davis, 9-7, in the semifinals but rebounded to defeat No. 8 Michigan, 8-6.
The Lions open the season 3-1with the split on Sunday after winning both games in the tournament on Saturday. Nicole Hughes added five goals on Sunday to give her 14 in four games to start the season. Sophomore Mary Ann Campos led the Lions on Sunday with six goals.
In the semifinals against UC Davis, the Lions held a 2-1 lead after the first period thanks to goals from Campos and fellow sophomore Diana Romero. The Aggies would go up 3-2, but just before half Hughes would tie it at 3-3.
The Aggies would pull away with three unanswered goals to start the third period and lead 7-4 heading into the final quarter. The teams traded goals on the next four possessions as UCD 9-6 lead before junior Anne Scott scored her second of the quarter for the final margin.
In the third place game the Lions jumped out to a 6-3 halftime lead thanks to goals from sophomore Daisy Carrillo, Hughes, and four from Campos, all the second quarter.
Michigan would score the only goal of the third quarter and then the first goal of the fourth to make it a one-goal game at 6-5. Hughes would give the Lions a two-goal lead with her goal at the 4:40 mark. Michigan would not go away as they scored with 3:01 to play to make it 7-6.
Hughes would then put the game away with a goal at the 1:46 mark.
The Lions will next play at third-ranked UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1:00 p.m.
