Cathedral City, CA - LMU opened up play at the Cathedral City Classic Thursday by earning a split against Southeastern Conference foes Mississippi and #9 Tennessee. The Lions (7-5) used a six-run fifth inning to beat Ole Miss in the first game but dropped its second game, 5-0 against the Lady Vols.

LMU took the lead against Mississippi with a pair of runs in the third. Freshman Sam Fischer got things going with a one out double, scoring two batters later on junior Darcy Pagnini's double. With two outs, senior Megan Ackerman reached on an error, prolonging the inning for freshman Kelly Sarginson, who drove in Pagnini with a single.

LMU's lead would last barely a half-inning as the Rebels stormed back for three runs in the top of the fourth and three more in the fifth to knock out junior starter Melissa Dykema. Alyssa McGovern tied the game with a two-run double, coming home with the go-ahead run on a bunt by Corrine Doornberg. Ole Miss extended its lead in the fifth, highlighted by Cali Overbeck's triple.

The Lions batted around in the sixth, putting up six runs on four hits while being aided by an error and two walks. Senior Chelsie Tysdal led off with a single and two more walks loaded the bases with one out for senior MiaSarah Cesena, who singled to right to make it 6-3. Junior J.J. Hartung followed with an RBI single to trim the deficit to two. With the bases loaded and two outs, an error by Rebel catcher Amber Tramp led to four runs as Fischer singled up the middle and Tramp threw the ball away, allowing the Lions to take the lead.

That would be all that freshman Corie Goodman would need. Goodman entered the game in relief in the fifth and tossed 2 2/3 innings of no-hit ball to improve to 4-3 on the season. Fischer, Tysdal, Sarginson, and Cesena all had two hits.

In the late game, Cat Hosfield held the Lions to one hit, that being a second inning single from Tysdal. Hosfield faced one over the minimum, striking out eight. Goodman (4-4) got the start and faired well, giving up just six hits but the Lions were done in by four errors, three coming in Tennessee's two-run first inning.

The Lions return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday against Tennessee Tech, then take on Georgia Tech at 8:30 p.m.
