San Diego, Calif. - In a showdown between the third and fourth place teams in the West Coast Conference, LMU dropped a 3-0 contest to San Diego on Friday night at Torero Stadium. The Lions (9-5-2, 1-2-1 WCC) opened up a tough two-game road trip with their second straight defeat while the Toreros (9-5-2, 3-1-0 WCC) win their second in a row.
San Diego put the LMU defense to the test from the opening whistle, recording four shots in the first eight minutes. Stephanie Ochs went wide in the third minute and LMU senior goalkeeper Allyssa Clark was forced into her first two saves of the match off shots from Natalie Vinti and Elissa Magracia before Magracia took a pass from Stephanie Ochs for the first tally of the game at 8:49.
LMU had its first opportunity in the 17th minute when senior Lacey Bartels found space but her shot was denied by USD goalie Courtney Parsons. After that, USD went back on the offensive, netting the second in the 25th minute when Magracia returned the favor to Ochs, who recorded the first of her two goals in the match. Ochs would complete the scoring in the 54th minute.
Looking to start a second-half rally, the Lions had two good chances. In the 60th minute, junior Lily Sorentino brought another save out of Parsons. Right at the end, junior Julie Gallaudet had LMU's final shot but her effort went wide.
Clark, the WCC leader in saves, was called into action to stop six for the Lions and now has 77 saves on the year. Parsons made two saves in the first 83 minutes before being relieved by Alex Dinan, who was not required for any saves in the last seven minutes. San Diego held a 12-3 shot advantage.
LMU continues its road trip at #16 Santa Clara on Sunday at 1 p.m.
