BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The LMU swimming team hit the water on Saturday in Bakersfield, Calif., earning dual-meet victories over Fresno Pacific (175-85) and Cal State Bakersfield (197-96). The Lions also squared-off against University of Pacific from the Big West Conference, falling 154-106. The quadruple-team dual was the first dual-meet competition for the Lions this season after finishing last year with a perfect 9-0 record.
Junior Anne Scott continued to shine this weekend, winning the 100 and 200 freestyle events with times of 52.19 and 1:54.31, respectively. Yvonne Le, a freshman from Austin, Texas, won the 100 butterfly in 58.64, narrowly defeating Pacific's Nicole Yamamoto at 58.73. The Lions also claimed the top spot in the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Alicia Witter, Megan Sawelson, Olivia Plume and Carolyn Pasque touched the wall in 3:37.59.
LMU opened competition on Saturday with the 200 medley relay, where Witter, Tammy Choy, O. Plume and Scott teamed to post a mark of 1:52.06 to claim third overall. Pacific nabbed the top spot in the race with a time of 1:49.27.
The Lions placed a swimmer in each of the three spots from fifth to seventh in the 1,000 freestyle. Freshman Terry Rinder led the trio of Lions with a time of 10:50.34, followed by Rebecca Plume at 10:54.02 and Casey Flacks at 11:00.33. Pacific dominated the race after claiming each of the top-three spots, led by Jayme Swalin's time of 10:21.58 to win the event.
In addition to Scott's first-place finish in the 200 freestyle, LMU also placed two more swimmers in the top-five of the event. Pacific's Jenny Lewis and KC Albiston took second and third before Sawelson and Witter rounded-out the top-five in 1:58.59 and 1:58.98.
Le was the lone top-five finisher for the Lions in the 100 backstroke, claiming fourth after finishing the race in 1:01.24. Kristen Lutjen and Michelle Horgan followed in seventh and eighth places, respectively. Fresno Pacific took the top spot in the event when Cheyenne Coffman touched the wall in 57.76.
Just as Le had done in the previous race, Choy represented the Lions in the top-five of the 100 breaststroke. The freshman just missed claiming fourth overall as she stopped the clock at 1:10.53. April Woo (Pacific) won the race by nearly two seconds with a time of 1:07.64, followed by Cal State Bakersfield's Tessa Brown in second place (1:09.59).
The Lions found themselves in third, fifth and sixth overall in the 200 butterfly, led by Trinity O'Neill's time of 2:10.25. Sophomore Katie Carmody took fifth in 2:14.13, followed shortly by Jill Dahle at 2:14.89 to finish sixth. Once again, it was Pacific who celebrated an event victory when Melissa McGhee touched in 2:06.58.
LMU showed strength in the 50 freestyle, winning third and fifth overall. Lewis (24.02) and Coffman (24.07) sprinted to a very close finish atop the event standings before Scott took third for the Lions in 24.27. After CSUB won fourth, O. Plume placed fifth with a time of 25.04.
Witter joined first-place-finisher Scott in the top-five of the 100 freestyle in the ensuing event for the Lions. The junior claimed fourth overall in 54.67, finishing slightly behind Bakersfield's Rachel McCall at 54.17. Sawelson narrowly missed the top-five, posting a sixth-place finish 54.91.
Le cemented herself in the top-three of the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:10.97 to claim third overall. Jun Huang of Pacific easily took the top spot in the race, touching the wall in 2:05.58, followed by teammate McGhee at 2:10.52. The nearest competition below Le proved to be Stacy Carter from Fresno Pacific, who turned-in a time of 2:12.85 to win fourth.
Choy once again found herself in the top-three of a race, winning second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.04. Devonie Migues of Pacific won the event in 2:23.92. Pacific and LMU dominated the 500 freestyle event, as the Tigers took first and second and the Lions claimed third and fifth. Swalin turned-in a time of 5:04.93, followed by Albiston at 5:07.99. R. Plume, who finished third overall, was the first Lion to finish at 5:14.59, with the second being Dahle in fifth at 5:16.09. Freshman Christina Cannata was the third and final Lion to score, posting a mark of 5:22.07, good for seventh overall.
Le and the Lions showed strength in the 100 butterfly, claiming first, third and fourth overall in the race. Pacific's Yamamoto broke up the trio with a second-place finish at 58.73, followed by Lim (59.04) and O. Plume (1:01.01).
Choy, T. O'Neill and Melanie Tansuwan finished third, fourth and fifth overall for LMU in the 200 individual medley. Choy's time of 2:12.40 just missed McGee's time of 2:12.20 to claim second place. Migues won the event in convincing fashion, posting a time of 2:08.91. T. O'Neill followed Choy at 2:14.26 before Tansuwan touched in 2:16.16.
The Lions finished the day strong, winning the 400 freestyle and also claiming third overall. The third-place finishers, comprised of Dahle, Danielle Garcia, Le and R. Plume finished the race in 3:45.37. Fresno Pacific claimed second place in 3:38.46.
The Lions return to action on November 9 when they host Seattle University in the first home meet of the season. That dual is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
