RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
The LMU swim team finished second at the PCSC Pentathlon on Saturday, finishing with 546.5 points, second only to Pepperdine University at 704 total points. The Lions lost ground to Pepperdine in the diving events, as LMU does not field a diving team, but did an outstanding job in the overall pentathlon and individual swimming events.
Junior Anne Scott placed second overall in the sprint IM pentathlon, while freshman Yvonne Le (second), junior Kristen Lutjen (ninth) and sophomore Trinity O'Neill (10th) all finished in the top-10 in the distance IM pentathlon. LMU dominated the freestyle-based pentathlon, as senior Rebecca Plume and junior Alicia Witter finished first and second overall. Senior Megan Sawelson (sixth), freshman Kyla Dahlquist (seventh) and sophomore Carolyn Pasque (eighth) ran the tally to five LMU swimmers in the top-10 of the pentathlon.
Scott turned in a time of 2:56.13 in the sprint IM pentathlon, finishing second to Pepperdine's Danielle Kimmel. Le's time of 6:21.59 firmly placed her in second place of the distance pentathlon, followed by Lutjen at 6:40.58 and O'Neill at 6:40.59. Plume won the freestyle pentathlon in 15:03.45, followed by Witter at 15:07.93 in second. The trio of Sawelson, Dahlquist and Pasque turned in times of 15:17.31, 15:17.35 and 15:20.73, in that order.
Witter and the Lions opened Saturday's events by hitting the water in the 200 freestyle, where Witter claimed third place overall in a time of 1:59.37. Plume was just behind her with a time of 1:59.47 to take fourth, followed by Jill Dahle in fifth after touching the wall in 1:59.91. LMU placed five swimmers in the top-10 of the race, capped by Pasque's time of 2:01.19 to claim ninth overall.
Le topped all swimmers in the 100 butterfly, turning in a time of 59.19 to edge Francesca Cyphers of Pepperdine for first place. O'Neill also placed in the top-five, finishing the race in 1:01.16 to claim fifth. Sophomore Katie Carmody was the third and final LMU swimmer to finish in the top-10, taking eighth in 1:01.65.
For the second consecutive race, LMU put two swimmers in the top-five of a butterfly event, this time at the 50 yard distance. Freshman Olivia Plume was narrowly edged by Fresno Pacific's Cheyenne Coffman for first place, turning in a time of 27.06 to Coffman's 27.03. After two Pepperdine swimmers finished in third and fourth place, junior Mallorie Lim took home fifth for LMU in 27.58.
The Lions showcased their abilities in the sprint freestyle events as participants took to the water in the 25 freestyle. Pasque motored to a first-place finish in 11.24, followed by teammates R. Plume (11.75) and Dahlquist (11.76) in second and third, respectively. Pasque's time set a new PCSC Pentathlon record for the distance. LMU also placed swimmers in seventh, ninth and 10th in the race. Witter (11.95), Sawelson (12.05) and Danielle Garcia (12.10) finished in those spots.
Le returned to the water and returned to the top-three as she took part in the 100 backstroke. The native of Austin, Texas finished second overall with a time of 1:02.02, as Grand Canyon's Caitlin Hoffman took the top spot in 1:01.92. In the day's next event, the 50 backstroke, Scott was the lone Lion to finish in the top-10, claiming 10th overall after touching the wall in 29.96. Coffman took first in the race in 26.34, while Peperdine placed four swimmers in the top-10.
R. Plume led a pack of three swimmers in the top-10 of the 500 freestyle, claiming third overall in 5:16.62. Freshman Terry Rinder was next to finish for the Lions, taking sixth in a time of 5:20.25. She was followed by Witter and Dahlquist in eighth and ninth. Witter turned in a time of 5:22.52, while Dahlquist touched in 5:23.14. Pepperdine's Madison Krall won the race in 5:10.27.
For the second time on the day, Le represented LMU as the lone Lion in the top-10 of a race, this time taking seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.35. Lutjen was the next Lion to finish, claiming 14th overall in 1:14.33. Seattle's Alexis Morehouse took the top spot in 1:08.46.
Scott returned to the water in the next event, the 50 breaststroke. There, she finished fourth after hitting the wall in 31.72. Pepperdine claimed three of the top-five spots in the race, including first and second. Danielle Kimmel turned in the best time of the race at 30.14, followed by teammate Kayleen Hicks at 30.91.
The Lions once again dominated a freestyle event, this time claiming six of the top-10 spots in the 100 freestyle. Witter took home first place with a new PCSC Pentathlon record of 54.18, chased by a Pepperdine swimmer and three more Lions. Sawelson took third in 54.77, followed by Pasque (54.84) and R. Plume (55.03). Dahlquist and Le finished seventh and eighth overall in 55.48 and 55.59, respectively.
Pepperdine and Cal Baptist stole the show in the 100 individual medley, as Pepperdine took the top spot and four of the top-10. Cal Baptist countered with three of the top-10 finishers, including each place from fifth to seventh. LMU's Scott finished third overall in 1:02.35, while Pepperdine's Kimmel led the pack in 1:01.08. Pepperdine also won the 200 individual medley, as Haley Wilson finished the race in 2:11.65. Le claimed second for the Lions after touching the wall in 2:12.44.
As it has done consistently in the past, LMU continued to roll in another sprint freestyle event, the 50 freestyle. Scott took first in 24.09, a new PCSC Pentathlon record for the distance, followed by Sawelson in seventh (25.49), R. Plume in eighth (25.54) and Pasque in 10th (25.58).
The Lions return to action on Saturday, October 25 at the Malibu Invitational in Malibu, Calif.
