RIVERSIDE, Calif. - LMU swimming finished in second place on Friday at the PCSC Relays, which were held in Riverside, Calif. The Lions fell to Pepperdine by 48 points at the conclusion of the events, including two diving events in which LMU does not field a team.
The Lions began the meet with a bang, claiming first place in the 300 butterfly relay with a time of 3:00.82. The team of juniors Mallorie Lim, Trinity O'Neill and Melanie Tansuwan just out-touched Pepperdine at 3:00.86 for the victory. LMU also claimed fifth and eighth in the event with times of 3:02.84 and 3:06.34, respectively.
The Lions next hit the water for the 300 backstroke relay, as freshman Tammy Choy, junior Alicia Witter and freshman Yvonne Le took home fourth place with a time of 3:03.46. Junior Kristen Lutjen, freshman Terry Rinder and sophomore Katie Carmody teamed to touch the wall in 3:11.59 to place seventh overall.
Loyola Marymount finished fifth in the 300 breastroke relay, as Pepperdine claimed two of the top-five times. Tansuwan, Choy and sophomore Carolyn Pasque combined for a 3:34.70 mark in the event. A second team of Lions, composed of sophomore Maeghan Cobbin, freshman Erin Rosas and senior Julia Hall, finished eighth overall in 3:47.09.
As it has done consistently over the past few years, LMU showed that freestyle events are a strong point for the program. The Lions finished first and third in the 800 freestyle relay, sandwiching Pepperdine in second place. Seniors Megan Sawelson, Danielle Garcia and Rebecca Plume, along Witter, teamed to win the event with a time of 7:59.32, beating their nearest competition by six seconds. Freshman Christina Cannata, Rinder, Carmody and Hall took third in 8:14.26 to cap the top-three.
Although they were out-touched by a second in the 500 freestyle, LMU did claim second and fourth place in the event. Freshman Olivia Plume, Pasque, freshman Anne Scott and freshman Jill Dahle were the second-place finishers with a time of 4:44.74. The team of Lim, Rosas, and freshmen Kyla Dahlquist and Casey Flacks touched the wall in 4:56.42 to take fourth, narrowly missing Pepperdine in third place.
LMU continued competition as it took fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:08.06. Choy, Scott, Le and Witter took that spot, followed by a team of Lions in ninth after finishing the race in 4:16.71.
LMU once again narrowly edged Pepperdine to take the top spot in an event as the teams took to the water in the 200 freestyle relay. Scott, Pasque, O. Plume and Sawelson's time of 1:39.01 barely bested Pepperdine's mark of 1:39.07. The Lions also claimed seventh in the race as Hall, Garcia, Tansuwan and Lutjen teamed to post a time of 1:44.42.
The Lions gained ground in the 1500 freestyle relay, taking second and third in the race behind host Cal Baptist. Dahle, T. O'Neill and R. Plume were the fastest Lions to finish, touching the wall in 15:57.50. The first-year team of Flacks, Rinder and Cannata were right behind the second-place pack, taking third in 15:58.65.
LMU once again claimed two of the top-five spots in an event, winning first and fourth in the 400 medley relay. O. Plume, Le, Choy and T. O'Neill took the top spot in the race with a time of 4:11.31, edging Pepperdine again at 4:11.33. LMU's second team of Dahlquist, Tansuwan, Lim and Lutjen completed the event in 4:20.77 to defeat Cal Baptist for fourth place.
Just as they had started the day, LMU finished day one with a bang, winning the 400 freestyle relay. Scott, Pasque, Sawelson and Witter combined to post a time of 3:36.52, leaving Pepperdine in second place once again. The Lions also took sixth in the event, as R. Plume, Garcia, Dahlquist and Le turned in a time of 3:48.33.
LMU will now compete at the PCSC Pentathlon on Saturday.
