Los Angeles, CA (Apr. 29) - Having to go through the host of the Western Water Polo Association Women's Water Polo Championship for the second year in a row, Loyola Marymount finds themselves back in the title game for the sixth straight year with a 9-4 win over host UC San Diego at Canyonview Pool in La Jolla, Calif., Saturday afternoon.
The Lions improve to 25-4 on the season and will face 14th-ranked UC Davis for the second consecutive year in the WWPA title game. Second-seed and 14th-ranked UC Davis defeated third-seed Santa Clara 6-3. LMU defeated the Aggies twice this season, 3-2 on March 29 at LMU and 10-8 on April 9 at Davis.
LMU advances thanks again to a balanced attack and solid defense. LMU took a 4-2 lead on goals from four different players. In addition, senior goalie Katie Murray made 14 saves, allowing UCSD to score just one goal per quarter.
With a 4-2 lead at the break the Lions then took over the game with a three-goal third frame. They finished the second half outscoring UCSD 5-2 to pull away. Katie Hicks, Rosanna Tomiuk and Nicole Hughes all scored two goals for the Lions.
