La Jolla, CA (Apr. 28) - Sixth-ranked Loyola Marymount defeated Cal State East Bay 18-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Western Water Polo Association Women's Water Polo Championship on Friday afternoon at Canyonview Pool on the campus of UC San Diego. With the win the Lions advance to play the host Tritons in the semifinals.
The Lions improve to 24-4 on the season and advance to the semifinals of the WWPA tournament for the eighth straight year. Cal State East Bay had defeated UC Santa Cruz in the first round to meet the Lions, who earned a bye to the quarterfinals as the number one seed.
The Lions opened the game with a 7-0 lead after the first frame and coasted from there. Daisy Fish and Crisara Abrams each earned hat-tricks on the day as nine different Lions scored. They lead 11-1 at the break and scored seven more in the second half to win their 17th straight in WWPA tournament play.
LMU will now meet one of their WWPA rivals in host UCSD. The fourth-seeded Tritons advanced with a narrow 6-5 win over fifth seed Cal State San Bernardino in the quarterfinals. The teams have met once in the regular season as the Lions build an early multiple goal lead and held on for a 10-9 lead at UCSD on March 17.
