Late Inning Runs Cost Lions

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland State scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and take a game one 7-5 win over Loyola Marymount in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference contest at Erv Lind Stadium Friday afternoon. The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader but the second game was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.

The two teams will now attempt to play a tripleheader Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Portland State (24-12, 5-0 PCSC) scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead, as the first five batters of the inning reached base and came around to score. Junior designated player Stephanie Bean hit a triple with the bases loaded to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead and chase sophomore right-hander Tiffany Pagano from the game.

Senior right-hander Krystal Kehr then came on in relief and was greeted by freshman first baseman Jana Rae Slayton with a two-run home run to make it 5-1. The home run was Slayton's second of the season.

The Lions (22-16, 2-3 PCSC) took advantage of a Viking error in the fifth to score four runs and tie the game at 5-5. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman center fielder Kirsten Slouber hit a grounder to third, however, Stokes' throw home was high allowing sophomore first baseman Tracy Cook to score on the error and make it 5-2. After freshman MiaSarah Cesena struck out for the second out of the inning, freshman center fielder Hillaree Bennett cleared the bases with a double to make it 5-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore right-hander Mandy Hill reached on a one-out single and junior left fielder Kimi Daniel followed with a single to put runners on first and second set-up Stokes' game-winning double.

The Vikings added an insurance run in the sixth when freshman second baseman Jamee Rauch scored on a Kehr wild pitch.

Hill (15-4) allowed five runs, only one earned, on five hits and struck out 10 in going the distance to earn the win.

Kehr (2-2) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out five.
