La Jolla, CA (Feb. 11) - The fifth-ranked Loyola Marymount University women's water polo team opened the 2006 season with an 8-5 win over #19 Cal State Northridge at the 2006 UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Lions (1-0) were led by sophomore Christine Robinson with four goals while freshman Nicole Hughes had a solid debut with a pair of tallies. Junior Sarah Hamilton and senior Stacia Peterson also scored for the Lions.
LMU opened the game with the first four goals as Hamilton scored 2:50 into the first period. Hughes scored her first collegiate goal under a minute later for the quick 2-0 lead. Robinson then scored back-to-back goals, one with just 13 seconds remaining in the first period and the other 37 seconds into the second frame.
After Cal State Northridge cut the lead to 4-1 with the only other tally of the second frame, a pair of goals by Robinson and another by Peterson pushed the lead to 7-1.
The Lions will complete the first day of play in the Triton Invitational when they face #12 UC Irvine at 3:00 p.m.
