Los Angeles, CA (Dec. 2) - Southern California scored the first nine goals of the game as they went on to defeat Navy 20-3 in the first semifinal of the 2006 National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on the campus of Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon. Cal then joined USC in the 2006 title game on Sunday with a 17-7 win over UC San Diego in the second semifinal.
Juan Delgadillo scored four goals as the Trojans scored seven goals in the first quarter to go up 9-0 before Navy answered. J.W. Krumpholz and Tommy Corcoran added three goals each for the Trojans. Ben Arnold scored two 6-on-5 goals for Navy.
The Trojans improved to 26-1 on the season and will look to defend their 2005 title against either Cal or UC San Diego. Navy falls to 24-6.
In the second semifinal, Cal outscored UCSD 12-4 in the final three quarters as they coast to the championship game. Cal improves to 30-4 while UCSD falls to 25-6.
The teams traded goals in the first half before Cal's Zac Monsees and Brian Kinsel scored back-to-back goals to take a two goal edge. Nestor Dordoni, Steven Donohoe and Jesse Casellini each scored to keep the game within two after the first frame, 5-3.
However, Cal erupted as Brian Bacharach, Kinsel, Joe Mann and Andrija Vasiljevic all scored a hat-trick on the day to lead Cal to 12 goals in the final three frames to pullaway.
USC and Cal will play in the championship at 2 p.m. on Sunday. It will be the fifth meeting of the year between the two rivals. USC won the first three but Cal won in the MPSF title game on Nov. 2. Navy will play in the consolation final at 12 noon against UCSD.
The championship will be on CSTV.
