Davis, Calif. (Oct. 22) - Senior Cuberto Hernandez scored with seven seconds remaining in the game to give No. 7 Loyola Marymount a dramatic 6-5 come-from-behind victory over No. 13 UC Davis in Western Water Polo Association action on Sunday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
The goal capped a dramatic Lions' rally in which they outscored the Aggies 6-0 throughout the final 18 minutes of the game. The win improves LMU to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in the WWPA while the Aggies fall to 10-10 and 5-3 in conference.
UC Davis came out firing against LMU to start the game with five unanswered goals and a 5-0 lead. The Lions finally got on the board with 39 seconds left in the half when senior Matt Reynolds scored to make the score 5-1 at halftime.
LMU continued to slowly battle their way back into the match as Hernandez and Tim Hummel scored in the third quarter to cut the Aggie lead to 5-3. Unable to get any kind of offensive rhythm going, the Aggies were unable to score in the second period of play.
Reynolds struck again with under four minutes left in the final quarter to make the score 5-4. Brian McShane's goal with 48 seconds left tied the game at 5-5 and marked five unanswered goal for the Lions. With only seven seconds remaining on the clock, Hernandez found the back of the net from about 15 meters out to complete the LMU comeback.
The Lions return to Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Saturday, Oct. 28 when they face No. 3 UCLA at 12 p.m.
