Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Slow Start Stunts Lions

LOS ANGELES – #14 Pacific came out firing and built too large of a lead for #10 LMU to come back from. The Tigers led 9-2 at the half before the Lions pulled back to within three in the closing minutes. Time expired with Pacific taking the game 15-11.

The Tigers started the game with a 4-0 lead before Abel Romero Corbalan and Nick Lueng cut the deficit in half. Pacific added a goal in the final minute of the first half to take a 5-2 lead.

The second quarter was all visitors as the Tigers scored all four goals in the period to take a 9-2 halftime advantage.

The first two goals also went in favor of Pacific as they built the largest lead of the game at 11-2 with seven minutes to play in the third quarter. LMU's offense awoke with five unanswered goals over the next four minutes. Leung bookended the run with the first and fifth goal of that stretch. Romero Corbalan, Mateo Obando, and Roman Saroyan also scored in the period. The Tigers added one in the closing seconds of the period to make it a 12-7 game entering the final period.

Alika Naone scored to open the fourth quarter to pull the Lions to 12-8. After Pacific added one back, Naone had a response to keep the score difference at four. The Tigers made it a five-goal game again before Jaxon Hoover and Naone went back-to-back to bring the Lions within three, 14-11, with 2:45 remaining. Pacific added one more over the last two minutes to bring the game final.

Roberto Barrera Sanchez made nine saves in relief of starter Finn Friedland.

The Lions will continue West Coast Conference play next weekend with a game at Santa Clara before playing the rest of the weekend at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
