Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 29) -Loyola Marymount men's water polo, ranked sixth in the nation, coasted to a 23-5 win over Gannon University and in the process set the all-time scoring record for a single game. The Lions scored the games first 10 goals in the win on Thursday afternoon at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.
The Lions scored nine goals in the first quarter as they were never threatened. The Lions won their fourth straight to improve to 10-5 on the season. The game against Gannon, coached by Kyle Witt who played for LMU through 2001, was a final tune-up for the Lions before they head to the 12-team SoCal Invitational this weekend, Oct. 14-15. All 12 teams in the tournament are ranked in the nation's top-20.
On the day 14 different players scored for LMU, including hat-tricks by Scott Langendoen, Pat Volosin, and Tim Hummel. LMU lead 14-1 at the break and scored nine more in the second half to set the school record for goals in a game.
LMU will face No. 13 Pepperdine at 8 a.m. on Saturday before facing No. 2 Cal at 12 noon in the first day of the SoCal Invite. The games will be at McDonalds Swim Stadium on the USC campus.
