Lions Can't Overcome Big Start By Bruins

March 17, 2005

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 1 UCLA women defeated No. 7 Loyola Marymount on Thursday, 12-5, in a non-conference matchup. The Lions found themselves in an early 5-1 deficit after the first period and couldn't recover despite outscoring the top-ranked Bruins 4-3 in the final two quarters. The Lions fall to 11-4 on the season and UCLA improves to 20-0.

The game started with an LMU goal by Katie Hicks, but UCLA quickly responded. The Bruins went on to score 11 goals in a row to put the game out of the way. During the third quarter, LMU ended this UCLA run of goals with a score by sophomore Sarah Hamilton.

Sophomore Dora Szabolcsi and freshman Rosanna Tomiuk scored for LMU in the last three minutes of the game. Szabolcsi's physical presence on the inside noticeably helped the Lions on defense throughout the game. UCLA though, was unstoppable with their relentless offense and tough defense.

Thalia Munro was the leading scorer for the Bruins with four goals. For the Lions, Christine Robinson, Hamilton, Hicks, Szabolcsi, and Tomiuk each had one goal. LMU goalkeeper Rachel Riddell had nine saves. There were seven ejections against UCLA and four against LMU.

The Lions will head to the Wolverine Invitational over the weekend, opening with Michigan State on Saturday.
