Five Lions Named Spring Academic All-WCC

June 1, 2004

San Bruno, Calif. - Loyola Marymount athletics placed five student-athletes on the West Coast Conference's Spring All-Academic team, the conference announced. Golf's Chaz Inouye, men's tennis' Carlos Malet, and Naomi Hoogesteger, Caitlin McClain, and Erin Ludwig of women's crew all earned the academic all-conference honor.

This season, Inouye became the first LMU golfer to twice finish in the top 10 at the WCC Championships and the first to earn back-to-back All-WCC recognition. The sophomore, who was the 2003 WCC Freshman Golfer of the Year, holds a 3.37 cumulative grade point average in communication studies.

Malet went 4-0 in doubles at the No. 2 spot, including defeating Santa Clara 9-8 (5) with teammate Beau Berglund at the WCC Championship. The sophomore earns his first all-conference recognition with a 3.58 cumulative GPA in business administration.

Hoogesteger, McClain, and Ludwig each earn WCC All-Academic recognition after leading LMU crew to a memorable season. The Lions saw their Women's Varsity 8 team win a record three championships on the season, including the San Diego Crew Classic title, a second straight Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association title and the West Coast Conference title. The women's team went 9-2 in dual competitions and took their highest overall finish in WCC history with a second place finish. Hoogesteger, the team's five-seat, has a 3.88 cumulative GPA in Spanish. Ludwig is a 3.68 cumulative accounting major who serves as the team's two-seat. McClain, a two-time All-WCC and WIRA All-Association first-team selection, who also earned 2003 Academic All-District honors, is the team's captain and stroke-seat with a 3.94 GPA in urban studies. All three were also named to the Academic All-West Region team.

The 2004 WCC Spring All-Academic teams honor some of the league's finest examples of the consummate scholar-athlete. At the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports.
