La Jolla, CA (March 6) - The ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount University women's water polo team swept a doubleheader in La Jolla, Calif., on Saturday, defeating 14th-ranked UC San Diego, 8-3, and Claremont, 8-2, in a pair of Western Water Polo Association contests.
The Lions, who improve to 9-3 on the season with the two wins, once again allowed four or less goals for the seventh time this season. Senior Devon Wright had an explosive day, scoring nine goals on the day.
In game two on the day, LMU was up 11-0 when the Athenas found the back of the cage for the first time. Wright had five of the Lion goals, with sophomore Stacia Peterson and junior Jessica Conner adding two each. Sophomore Katherine Murray made 10 saves for LMU.
In the final match-up of the day, between Western Water Polo Association rivals LMU and UCSD, the visiting Lions produced the first two scores of the game before Triton senior Meris Bantilan-Smith made it a 2-1 game at the end of one.
After a scoreless second frame, LMU took a 4-1 lead in period three thanks to four goals by Wright. The Tritons would get no Closer than two goals, however, as Loyola Marymount tallied four times without an answer in the fourth quarter for the 8-3 final.
It was the Lions' second win over UCSD this season after a 10-1 decision, also in La Jolla, on February 7. Murray made seven saves in the win.
The Lions will return home to host 16th-ranked UC Irvine at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on March 10 at 3:00 p.m.
