Los Angeles, CA (July 17) - The Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2003 season. The Lions will play at least 18 games against teams who finished the 2002 season ranked in the nation's top 20.
The Lions will once again start the season with a trip to the UC San Diego Invitational on Sept. 6-7 at Canyonview Pool on the campus of rival UC San Diego. The Triton's defeated the Lions in the Western Water Polo Association Championship at Canyonview last season. The two programs have battled for the title the last three seasons with the Lions winning in 2001.
The Lions will then host their first home game of the season at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Sept. 12 against UC Davis. The game will start at 4:00 p.m. Following the match-up against UC Davis, the Lions will take on UC Irvine, who finished ranked sixth in the nation, on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Irvine, Calif.
Other ranked teams on the Lions' schedule for 2003 includes third-ranked Pepperdine (Sept. 27 at Burns and Nov. 13 in Malibu), 17th-ranked BYU Hawaii (Oct. 9 at Burns), 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 11 in Santa Barbara), top-ranked Stanford (Oct. 12 at Burns), another date with 10th-ranked UC San Diego (Oct. 17 at Burns), fifth-ranked USD (Oct. 22 at USC), fourth-ranked UCLA (Nov. 6 at Burns) and 16th-ranked Air Force (Nov. 8 at Burns).
The Lions will also participate in the traditionally loaded SoCal and NorCal Tournaments. Both feature fields of more than 12 teams, all ranked in the nation's top-20. UC Irvine will host the SoCal Tournament on Sept. 20-21 and the NorCal Tournament will be at Stanford Oct. 4-5.
