Men's Water Polo

No. 10 Water Polo Drops Heartbreak to No. 4 UCLA

Nov. 6, 2003

Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 6) - The 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team took a three-goal lead into the fourth quarter but could not hang on as fourth-ranked UCLA came from behind for the win, 7-6, in overtime at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Tuesday afternoon.

UCLA's Ted Peck scored with just four seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift the Bruins to the one-goal win. The Bruins improve to 15-5 on the season. For the Lions it is the ninth time this season they have dropped a one-goal game to a ranked opponent after having the lead at one point in the contest. LMU falls to 11-12 on the year.

The Lions took a one-goal lead into the fourth and final quarter and then extended it by two with back-to-back tallies. Sophomore Endre Rex-Kiss, who finished with three goals on the game, scored on a break-away with 5:31 left in regulation to make the score 5-3. Senior Scott Smith followed more than a minute later with another goal to make the score 6-3 with 4:23 remaining.

The Bruins would call a time out and then respond with three unanswered goals to send the game into overtime. Josh Hewko would score back-to-back tallies at 4:11 and then 2:29 on the clock to put the Bruins within one goal. Then with 1:43 on the clock Michael March tied the game at 6-6 to set-up the game winner.

The Lions had their chance in the final minute of regulation. The Lions earned an extra-man attack with 45 seconds left in regulation. Senior Ryan Chapatte's shot with 25 seconds left hit the cross bar and appeared to be in goal. However, UCLA goalie Joseph Axelrad recovered in time to keep the ball from crossing the goal plane.

It was a tight contest from the start as the first seven goals of the game were on extra-man attack. The Bruins scored on three of their first five extra-man opportunities and the Lions scored on four of their first five. However, after the third period neither team allowed an extra-man goal.

Both goalies had impressive games to keep their team's in the game. Axelrad had four saves in overtime, two on point-blank shots to secure the win. LMU goalie Ian Elliot had two of his own in overtime and finished with 10 saves. Axelrad had 11 for the game.

LMU will host a doubleheader at home on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they take on Air Force at 11 a.m. and then Redlands at 1:30 p.m.
