MALIBU, Calif. (Nov. 13) - After trailing 3-1 in the second half, the 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount men's water polo team came from behind to send the game against fifth-ranked Pepperdine to overtime. The Waves scored on a goal from Pono Acosta in sudden-victory to defeat the 7-6, at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on Thursday.
Seniors Scott Smith and Ryan Chapatte paced the Lions with two goals while Pepperidne's Josh Acosta had a hat trick on the day. Pepperdine improves its record to 16-6 overall and LMU falls to 13-13 overall.
The heartbreaker was the Lions' second overtime setback to a team in the nation's top-five in the last week and 10th one-goal loss to a nationally ranked team on the season. They have held the lead in every one of those contests on the season.
The Waves kept a comfortable lead at 5-3 after freshman Garrit Barth scored off a Michael Hausmann assist late in the fourth quarter. The Lions would not be denied as almost a minute and a half later Smith scored and on the next position senior Kris Barr tied the score up at 5-5 with 58 seconds left in regulation.
The game moved to overtime and LMU's Ryan Chapatte got off the first score at 1:10 in the first overtime. Pepperdine raced down and Acosta scored long to tie the game up again at 6-6 at 1:03. For the next minute and entire second overtime, both teams remained scoreless and sent the match into sudden-victory overtime.
