Men's Water Polo

LMU Falls to Top-Ranked Stanford

Sept. 29, 2002

Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 29, 2002) -- Stanford University built an early 5-1 lead and the Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team could not recover as the top-ranked Cardinal defeat the Lions 13-5 in front of 410 in attendance at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.

Stanford scored the game's first three goals and built an 8-1 lead. The Lions would make a rally in the third period to cut the lead to 9-5. However, the Cardinal added four more in the final frame to improve to 8-1 on the season and rebound from their first loss of the season on Saturday. The Lions, who had their two-game winning streak against teams ranked in the top-12 snapped, fall to 5-6 on the year.

Leading the way for the Cardinal was sophomore Tony Azevedo with four goals, bringing his nation's best total on the season to 27. Azevedo would score two of Stanford's first three goals and added his fourth to end the Lions rally in the final half.

Trailing 9-2 after Stanford's Mike Derse scored the second of his three goals on the day, LMU would get two straight to end the third period. Junior Ryan Chapatte scored his 14th of the season with 1:10 remaining to cut the lead to 9-3. After senior Andrew Jensen scored with 29 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 9-4, Chapatte added his second of the game at the 5:23 mark of the fourth period. The goal was his 15th of the year and cut the lead to 9-5.

Stanford would earn goals from Azevedo, Derse, Peter Hudnut and Greg Crum for the final margin of victory.

Both teams will next play in the NorCal Tournament held in Berkeley, Calif., on Oct. 5-6. The Lions will open the tournament against Long Beach State at 9:10 a.m. Stanford and LMU are in the same group for the tournament, along with Long Beach State and UC Santa Cruz.
