Four Lions Named To 2002 All-WAC Softball Team

Los Angeles, Calif., Tuesday, May 14, 2002 -- The Loyola Marymount women's softball team had four athletes selected to the 2002 All-Western Athletic Conference softball team as announced by the WAC on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Christy Cerecedes and sophomores Sami Strinz and Trisha Gomes were honored as first team members while freshman Emily Foltz was the Lions' only selection to the second team squad.

Cerecedes, a 5-7 native of Hacienda Heights, Calif., currently leads the team with a blistering .332 batting average, third best in the WAC. Her 73 hits is not only tops on the team but is tops among WAC leaders as well. She is also tied for the squad lead with 11 doubles on the year.

Strinz, a utility player from Keizer, Oreg., was clutch at the plate for LMU with runners in scoring position. The second year player led the Lions with 37 RBI and ranked fourth among the WAC leaders. Strinz' eight home runs was second best on the team and third best in the conference. Strinz' bat wasn't the only thing on fire as she recorded an impressive 15-6 record on the mound and led the Lion pitching staff with a 1.65 ERA.

Gomes, a 5-8 native of Lodi, Calif., was key to the Lions' success in 2002 with her solid .276 batting average. She had 306 putouts for LMU behind the plate and helped the pitching staff to a winning 38-34 record for the season. Gomes' 10 doubles was second best on the squad.

Foltz, a 5-6 native of Los Alamitos, Calif., posted 43 hits on the year and finished third on the team with 23 RBI. In her first year as a Lion the freshman posted a .230 batting average, had 43 hits, seven doubles and six home runs.
