Softball Defeat Santa Clara 3-1

Moraga, CA (May 11, 2002) --? In Saturday's final two round robin games, Loyola Marymount defeated Santa Clara 3-1 to move to 5-1 overall in the Western Intercollegiate Softball League (WISL) Tournament and earn the number-one seed heading into Sunday's elimination bracket. Santa Clara locked down the number-three seed by defeating San Diego 5-0 at Cottrell Field.

Loyola Marymount pulled out a 3-1 victory over Santa Clara, as the Lions pitcher Sami Strintz tossed her second complete game of the day and improved to 15-5 on the season. Strinz allowed just one run on four hits. Santa Clara's Lacey Smale's RBI double in the bottom of the first gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead, but in the top of the third inning LMU took the lead with two runs. The first run coming on an RBI triple by Jessica Grassi. Grassi would later score on sacrifice fly by Casie Phillips. LMU added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the win.

Sunday's action will begin at 9:00 am when #2 Saint Mary's (4-2 WISL)battles #3 Santa Clara (2-4 WISL). The second game of the day will feature #1 Loyola Marymount (5-1 WISL) against #4 San Diego (1-5 WISL) starting at 11:00 am. The championship game will begin at 1:00 pm and it will feature the winners of the two morning games. There is no consolation game for third place.
