Martirosyan Just One Match From Main Draw at ITA Tourney

Los Angeles, Calif. - With a straight-set victory, Loyola Marymount's Tigran Martirosyan has positioned himself just one win away from the Main Draw of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship, in Chattanooga, Tenn. Martirosyan earned a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Purdue's Scott Mayer, the No. 14 seed, in the opening round of the qualifying draw. Martirosyan advances to face Dustin Taylor of Tulsa, Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Taylor defeated BYU's Carlos Lozano 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round.

Two other Lions have been invited to the ITA Men's All-American Championship, but neither made it out of prequalifying. Martirosyan is the first player in Loyola Marymount history to advance to the qualifying round. He is now 5-0 on the season, earning four victories during prequalifying.

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship is not only the largest single tournament of this season in collegiate tennis, with over 350 competitors, but is also the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2002-03 collegiate tennis season (followed by the Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the season-ending NCAA Championships in May).

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship featured a 256-competitor prequalifying tournament which fed into the 64-player qualifying tournament, being played today and tomorrow. Sixteen will advance to the 64-player main draw that takes place Oct. 10-13.
