Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 13) -- The seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team could not overcome a four-goal third period outburst by the second-ranked UCLA Bruins as the Lions fall 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
The Lions fall to 8-10 on the season, all 10 of the losses have been to teams ranked in the nation's top-20. UCLA improves to 8-4 on the year.
Both teams got off to a slow start with UCLA's Brett Ormsby scoring the only goal of the first period. Lions' goalkeeper, senior Kevin Paulsen, had a large part in the tight first period, knocking a way a penalty shot by Ormsby with 1:47 left in the first period. He finished with nine saves on the day.
The second period saw more offense with UCLA scoring less than a minute into the period by Peter Belden. They added one more by Nick Pacelli to build a 3-0 lead. The Lions cut into the lead with their first goal of the day, an extra-man tally by junior Ryan Chapatte with 1:29 remaining in the half.
With a 3-1 lead, the Bruins scored four unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead. The Lions added two goals in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the six-goal deficit. Seniors Kevin Witt and Eric Lefebvre scored in the fourth frame.
The Lions return home and continue play against the nation's best, hosting fourth-ranked UC Irvine on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
