Just Briefly
The Lions split a doubleheader on Saturday as they were defeated by the No. 3 UCLA Bruins. The Lions then rebounded with the 17-2 win over the Occidental Tigers. The Lions are currently ranked at No. 11 in the nation.

It will be a crucial contest against cross-town rival and 5th ranked Pepperdine on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 3:00 p.m. They finish the week in the South Bay of Los Angeles as they face the No. 7 UC Irvine Anteaters on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
Against the Seasiders...
The Lions added to their season win total with the 16-7 victory over BYU-Hawaii. This game was originally scheduled for the previous Wednesday at LMU's Aquatics Complex, however both teams decided it was best to postpone the game in light of the national tragedy. LMU came out strong in the first quarter out-scoring the Seasiders 6-2. Freshman utility player Stephen Lipinski was LMU's go-to man for the match, as he scored three goals in six attempts. Kris Barr also found the back of the net three times. Scott Smith was also successful with three goals of his ownin the second half. Sean Wimer came out strong in the fourth quarter scoring two Lion goals. Kyle Witt led the Lions in assists with three.
The Bruins....
In the first game, the Lions and Bruins held a steady first period, each team scoring two goals. Kris Barr and Stephen Lipinski each netted one goal each for the Lions, and Jon Puffer and Matt Flesher each scored for the Bruins. UCLA pulled away in the second period, out-scoring the Lions 4-1, with Scott Smith's lone goal. UCLA took the 6-3 lead into the halftime. The Lions were unable to stop the Bruins in the second half of the game. Tamas Szego was the only Lion to score in the second half with his goal in the last minute of the third period. Kevin Paulsen defended the net for the Lions, collecting nine saves in the game, and allowing nine shots.
And The Tigers...
LMU came out strong against the Occidental Tigers winning that game 17-2. The Lions scored an impressive 10 goals in the first half, Paulsen defended the goal well, allowing not a single shot going into halftime. Szego and Kris Barr led the Lions at the half with their three goals each. Lipinski scored his only goal of the game in the second period, Trevor Wagner scored a single goal and Kyle Witt went into halftime with his two goals. The second half started with many of the reserve players. Patrick Treanor defended the goal, collecting his three saves of the game, and allowing only two goals. Patrick Reilly, Andrew Aukland and Sean Wimer each scored two goals in the game. P.J. Rosenquist was also successful with a single goal. Only two Tigers were able to score on the Lions's defense.
LMU Head Coach
John Loughran enters his fourth season as head coach of the aquatics programs at LMU, which encompasses both men's and women's water polo as well as women's swimming. A 1990 graduate of Loyola Chicago, Loughran guided the men's water polo team to a school-best 22-9 record last year and the program's highest finish (third) in the Western Water Polo Association Championships. Loughran's record at LMU heading into 2000 is 47-40, while his career mark stands at 126-104. Last year coach Loughran took the LMU women's water polo team all the way to the Final Four.
The Big Wave
Pepperdine is currently ranked No.5 in the nation according to the USWPA. Pepperdine is led this season by Greg Lonzo's seven goals. The Waves were defeated 9-8 by No. 3 USC in a sudden-death overtime on Sept. 22 at the McDonalds Olympic Swim Complex. After visiting the Lions on Wednesday the Waves continue their road trip to UC Irvine where they face the Anteaters on Saturday Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m..
Anteater Bits
UC Irvine is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation. They are coming off of a 12-9 loss to the No. 3 Trojans on Sunday, Sept. 23. On Saturday the Anteaters shut down Pacific with a 9-6 win in their season-opener. John Dorfi leads the Anteaters with six goals after three games. Chris Kirchwehm follows with five and Garrett Gentry has scored four goals.
