Lions Outfox Marist Red Foxes, 59-50

Los Angeles, Calif., - Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 - The Loyola Marymount women's basketball team claimed a 59-50 win over the Marist College Red Foxes on Friday night in front of 387 at Gersten Pavilion. Junior Kate Murray led all scorers and put up a double-double with her game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night.

The Lions improve to 8-3 with the win while Marist drops to 4-5 with the loss.

LMU jumped out to a quick 12-point lead (18-6) in the first half. Sophomore Adrianne Slaughter had a hand in keeping Marist from scoring as she racked up five blocks in the opening period of play. Slaughter would finish the night with six blocks, five points and nine boards. Senior Bryn Britton was the leading scorer of the half with eight points, the Lions would take a 27-21 lead into the lockerroom.

The Red Foxes cut LMU's lead to just three points twice in the second half. The first came just moments into the final period as Marie Fusci drained one of her two 3-pointers of the night. Fusci would lead the Red Foxes' scoring efforts with a squad-high 11 points in the game. With 12 minutes remaining in the game Marist cut the deficit to three again on a layup by Stephanie DelPreore. DelPreore finished the night with eight points and six rebounds. .

Three points was as close as the Lions would allow Marist to get as they went on the 59-50 win. Murray's double-double led the Lions' scoring and rebounding efforts. Britton ended her night with 14 points, eight boards and two assists. Freshman Mary Turner would round out LMU's double-digit scorers with 13 points.

The Lions open the new year on the road with a game against New Mexico on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
