Los Angeles, CA -- The No. 11 Lions defeated the Whittier Poets at the Burns Aquatics Complex 14-4 Saturday morning in the first game of the their doubleheader, after suffering a 8-5 defeat to UCSB last night.

The Lions came out strong in the game, taking an early 3-1 lead in the first quarter. Kevin Witt, Patrick Reilly and Kris Barr were all successful in their shot attempts. Damon Kern was the only Poet to score in the first quarter.
Stephen Lipinski was the only Lion to score in the second period, as Whittier's Brendan Maun answered back with his lone goal, not more than 15 seconds later.
The Lions began to pull away in the third period, as goals came from Kyle Witt, Tamas Szego (their first goals of the game), Barr and Lipinski, each scoring their second goals. Garrett Cobb and Joe Gonzalez were each successful in their shot attempts to bring the score to 8-4 in the third quarter. Kevin Paulen played the first three quarters for the Lions, collecting four saves on the afternoon.
Patrick Treanor started in goal for the Lions in the last quarter where he collected two saves, while not allowing a single Whittier goal. The Lions sealed the win in the last period with fourth-quarter goals coming from Sean Wimer, Adam Zintsmaster, Szego, Kyle Witt, and Lipinski (2).
The Lions host Pomona at 2:00 this afternoon for the second game of today's doubleheader.
