No. 11 Men's Water Polo Unable To Take Gauchos

Oct. 5, 2001

Los Angeles, CA -- The 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team was unable to use their eight-day layoff to their advantage Friday as they were defeated 8-5 by the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos' defense was held tight by All-American goalie, Trevor Spence. Spence allowed only 5 goals from the Lions, who have been averaging over 10 goals per game. LMU's goalie tallied 6 saves, and allowed 8 for the game.

UCSB came out strong in the first quarter to take the early 3-0 lead. The Lions went into halftime led by Tamas Szego and Kevin Witt, as they were the only Lions to score in the first half.

Kris Barr put another shot into the back of the net in the third quarter with one minute remaining. Szego was again successful at scoring in the last quarter, along with Kyle Witt for his lone goal. The Gauchos' scoring was led by Joey Pacelli (2), Doug Arthur (2), Brian Alexander (2), Partick Treman and Anthony Borasi.

The Lions return to their Burns Aquatics Complex Saturday to host Whittier (11:00 a.m.) and Pomona (2:00 p.m.) doubleheader day. They then hit the road until Oct. 21 when they host Cal.
