LMU Captures Wingspan.com/WTT Regional Championship

Los Angeles, Calif. Loyola Marymount University's men's and women's tennis teams combined to win the 2001 Wingspan.com/WTT Regionals held in Irvine, CA. The co-ed Lions team defeated UC Riverside 30-13 in the semi-finals and then beat UC Irvine 25-19 in the finals to earn the championship. In the Fall, LMU will move on and battle 15 other regional winners for the national championship.

In the finals, sophomore Leopold Graeubig and junior Andrea Lord both captured their singles matches. Greaubig defeated Oliver Schweitzer 6-5 and Lord defeated Amy Trankino 6-3. In doubles action, Lord and sophomore Angelina Zdorovytska defeated Nicole Kabe and Trankino, 6-1. In mixed doubles, Penka Fileva and Graeubig were victorious by the score of 6-4.

In the semi finals against UC Riverside, LMU captured all five events. Graeubig lead the way in men's singles with a 6-1 win over Derrick Betyar. In remaining action, Lord and Zdorovytska captured the women's doubles match, Fileva won the women's singles match and Graeubig and Flieva won the mixed doubles.
