Michael McCabe

Michael McCabe joined the LMU Men’s Golf staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2019-20 school year following a professional career that has spanned over a decade. McCabe has played over 30+ golf tournaments a year for the last 13 years, including every major tour in North America.

For just the second time in school history, LMU men’s golf was selected to compete as a team in the NCAA Tournament. The Lions earned at-large bid in 2024 and was selected to play in the Chapel Hill Regional after a record-setting regular season that included three tournament wins, three individual wins, and new records in scoring. McCabe helped guide the Lions, along with WCC Player of the Year Riley Lewis and WCC Freshman of the Year Mason Snyder, to back-to-back tournament wins to start the season, shooting 47-under at the Golfweek Intercollegiate (Sept. 10-12, 2023) and 38-under at the USF-Howard Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19, 2023)… The Lions topped that with a team 806 to finish 58-under par and win the Kapolei Invitational (Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2023) for the program’s third team win of the fall… McCabe helped guide LMU to a third-place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships with the team’s 21-under par all but securing the return to the NCAA Tournament… LMU placed ninth in the NCAA Regional, finishing the remarkable year at 3-under, 837.

McCabe helped coach Riley Lewis to back-to-back individual selections into the NCAA Regionals after Lewis tied for first in the West Coast Conference Championships with his 9-under 70-69-68--207 performance. Lewis's season, which boasted the program's sixth-best single season stroke average at 71.48, earned the junior his second consecutive individual selection into the NCAA Regionals. Lewis forced a three-hole playoff to advance as the top individual out of the NCAA Morgan Hill Regional (May 15-17, 2023) after shooting 4-under, 71-72-69—212 and tying for second overall after recording birdies on the final two holes. With the playoff win, McCabe was able to coach Lewis on the national stage at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, with Lewis becoming the program's only individual to advance that far.

McCabe helped coach the 2022 West Coast Conference Individual Champion as Riley Lewis shot a 7-under, 69-70-70--209 to earn the individual title as a sophomore. Lewis continued his season with his second-consecutive individual selection to the NCAA Regionals and tied for 20th in the 80-player field in Bryan, Texas.

In his first season with the program, McCabe helped guide the Lions through a shortened year due to the Coronavirus… In seven team events and one individual-only event, LMU averaged 292.52 with six top 10 finishes and a runner-up by Gavin Cohen in the Loyola Intercollegiate (Feb. 22-24, 2020) with the junior’s 71-68-67—206… LMU finished three of seven tournaments at par or better… LMU’s 10-under 284-285-285—854 performance at the Loyola Intercollegiate (Feb. 22-24, 2020) pushed the Lions into fourth place… In Hawaii, LMU shot 1-under par to finish the Hoakalei C.C. Invitational (Oct. 28-30, 2019) with a 285-293-285—863 and eighth place finish in the largest field of the year… The Lions shot even (284-284-284—852) at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 7-8, 2019)… No WCC Championships were held.

His experience as a professional includes two events on the PGA Tour, two events on the Web.com Tour, 36 events for PGA Tour Canada, and an event on the PGA Tour Latino America. His success is proven with over 35 professional tournament wins.

McCabe is a former WCC golfer, after earning his degree in Organizational Communications from University of Portland in 2006. McCabe finished twice in the top-10 of the WCC Championships, tying four 4th in 2003 and earning All-WCC Honors that season, and then tying for ninth in 2005.
