Justin Dedman named as assistant coach in July of 2023 ahead of 2024 baseball season.
Dedman's baseball experience has taken him across the country, most recently a member of the Missouri Tigers of the Southeastern Conference. Acting as the Director of Player Development, Dedman and the Tigers set program records in homeruns, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS. The Tigers went 30-24 in 2023, with a sweep against College World Series participant Tennessee and a win against CWS semifinalist TCU. Â
Â
"I am ecstatic to work in LMU's championship environment with a longtime friend and mentor in Ferg," said Dedman. "He is an incredible human, genuine leader and true developer of ballplayers. I am deeply appreciative of him and can't wait to get to know our team and build something truly special together."Â
Â
Prior to his time with the Tigers, Dedman was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Miami University (OH). The Redhawks went 105-77 in his four years in Miami, Ohio and oversaw offenses that made significant leaps in production. The Redhawks upgraded batting average, on-base percentage, stolen bases and runs per game. Â
Â
Dedman has also made stops at Ole Miss and at Division II and NAIA powerhouse Lee University in Tennessee. The Flames went 291-116 during his tenure and made five World Series appearances, finishing as runners-up on two occasions. Â
"Justin is one of the best offensive minds in the country, but also one of the best people. I'm so lucky to be able to get him to join me here on the Bluff," said Fergus.Â
Â
Dedman's coaching career began in 2006 at his alma mater, Denison University, serving as an assistant for a pair of seasons before assuming the head coaching title in 2009. The Big Red went 48-37 during his tenure and made it to the NCAC Championship in 2008. Â
Â
Dedman has coached in five World Series, coached 31 draft picks and 10 free agent signings and has recruited 28 picks to boot. Included in those groups is first rounder Sam Bachman, selected ninth overall in 2021. Â
Â
Dedman was an All-NCAC outfielder at Denison University, helping the Big Red to a No. 5 national ranking during his senior campaign. Â
Â
Dedman and his wife Brittany have a pair of children, Norah and Maddux, and he enjoys spending time with them, grilling, lifting weights and reading in his spare time.Â
