Athletics Director's Update

I have just completed reading a book titled "Good to Great" written by Jim Collins. He points to one of the factors for converting good organizations into great ones is the quality of people that you are able to attract and retain. LMU has been fortunate to hire coaches, administrators and staff who embody the University's qualities and who want to be Lions. In turn, we have been able to recruit outstanding student-athletes to the program who want to represent Loyola Marymount University.

As promised, I hope to every once in awhile invite one of the LMU Athletics staff write the column so that you, our LMU fans, will get to know our professionals. In this column, Betty Werner writes about her background and responsibilities. So enjoy reading about Betty and know that her expertise and energy have been tremendous assets to the program. Thank you for logging into this column and following LMU Lions athletics.

Go Lions!
Bill Husak

In September 2000, I had the privilege to serve LMU Athletics as Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations. After many years serving in the same capacity at three different Division I institutions plus a brief tour of duty in private business including three years with The Colorado Rockies Baseball Organization, it was with great excitement that I accepted LMU's offer to move way-out-west. My knowledge and understanding of the sporting world as a professional tennis player, successful Division I coach, and administrator helps me provide the tools to enhance the academic, athletic, and life-time experience for LMU student-athletes and coaches

My daily responsibilities center around supervising eight sports, facilities, events, athletic training, strength and conditioning, and anything the Athletics Director asks. Additionally, I am currently responsible for directing the NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships at LMU on December 7-8, 2002. As an ex-officio member of the LMU Athletics Advisory Board, I have consulting responsibilities for ensuring compliance with gender equity. Last year, I introduced the annual Women's Basketball Ticket Campaign that was very successful in providing new sources of revenue and significant fans. This year, the ticket campaign will also be implemented for Men's Basketball.

I am generally working at all the home athletics events; the headset I wear really plugs me into a higher level of communication. I look forward to meeting all Lions, so please stop me at the games and say hi.

Go Lions!
