Lions Locked in Pitcher’s Duel Before Eighth-Inning Breakaway

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU softball opened its final home series of the 2026 season on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field with a battle that had all the tension of a postseason matchup, staying tight from the first pitch through extra innings before Oregon State used a late surge to pull away for an 8-2 win.

Game one immediately set the tone for a back-and-forth contest. The Lions wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first, as Avery Francis sparked the offense with a leadoff single and aggressive baserunning before coming home on a sacrifice fly from Izzy Jamgotchian to give LMU the early edge.

Oregon State answered right back, using a solo home run in the second inning to even things up, and another in the third to take a 2-1 lead. But LMU had a response ready, and it came in a big way. Leading off the bottom of the third, Jamgotchian launched a towering shot to center field that seemed to hang in the air forever, rising high into the sky and carrying into the deepest part of the park. Players and fans alike could only watch as it continued to travel, waiting for it to finally drop – until it cleared the fence for a no-doubt home run, tying the game at 2-2 and injecting energy into the Lions' dugout.

From there, the game settled into a tense back-and-forth battle. Both sides found opportunities, but it was the pitching and defense that rose to the occasion. Sara Pinedo and Sawyer Denser combined to hold the Beavers in check through regulation, stranding runners and escaping key moments, while the Lions continued to generate pressure at the plate, highlighted by a double from Rubi Lopez and a multi-hit performance from Avery Francis.

Inning after inning, neither side blinked. The score remained locked at 2-2 through the seventh, sending the game into extras with the outcome still hanging in the balance.

It wasn't until the top of the eighth that the stalemate finally broke. Oregon State capitalized on a sequence of hits and defensive miscues, stringing together a six-run inning to create separation in what had been a razor-close game.

LMU looked to answer in the bottom half, but the Beavers were able to shut the door and secure the 8-2 decision.

Despite the final score, the Lions showed fight throughout, matching Oregon State pitch-for-pitch and play-for-play in a game that stayed within reach until the final inning.

LMU will be back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Smith Field for game two of the series.
