Lions Fall in Final Game of Series at Saint Mary’s

MORAGA, Calif. - LMU softball dropped the series finale to Saint Mary's, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Cottrell Field, as the Gaels claimed the three-game West Coast Conference series.

The Lions (32-17) struck first in the opening inning behind strong early execution at the plate. Avery Francis led off with a single, swiped her 30th base of the season to move into scoring position, and came around to score on an RBI single from Sydney Poole to give LMU a 1-0 lead.

Saint Mary's answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning to even the score, and the game remained tight through the early frames as both sides settled in defensively.

LMU continued to generate offense throughout the contest, finishing with nine hits, but was unable to convert key opportunities into runs . Francis paced the Lions with a 3-for-4 performance at the top of the lineup, while Poole added two hits and the team's lone RBI.

The turning point came in the middle innings, as the Gaels broke through with a two-run home run in the fourth to take the lead before adding three more runs in the fifth to create separation .

Inside the circle, Lindsay O'Dell was charged with the loss after allowing five runs over 4.1 innings, while Savannah Hooks and Sawyer Denser combined to finish the game in relief .

Despite out-hitting Saint Mary's at times and keeping pressure on offensively, the Lions were unable to find the timely hit needed to close the gap late.

The Lions will look to regroup as they return to action next week. The Lions head back home to Smith Field for their final regular season series, hosting Oregon State beginning Thursday, May 7 at 3:00 PM.
