Lions Manufacture Late Run, but Gaels Pull Away in Game 2

MORAGA, Calif. - LMU softball came up short in Game 2 of its West Coast Conference series, falling 6-1 to Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon at Cottrell Field. With the result, the series is now even at one game apiece heading into Sunday's finale.

Saint Mary's jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the opening inning, putting LMU (32-16) in an immediate hole. The Lions battled to respond but were held to four hits on the day, as the Gaels' pitching staff kept LMU's offense in check .

LMU found its spark in the sixth inning, manufacturing a run through aggressive and disciplined play. Sydney Poole led off with a single, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Rubi Lopez, then stole third to put pressure on the defense. Sakora Harvell delivered with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Poole home and cutting the deficit to 2-1 .

In the circle, Angela Carrera provided a key stabilizing presence out of the bullpen, tossing 3.0 shutout innings to keep the Lions within reach through the middle of the game .

The Gaels, however, answered in the bottom half of the sixth inning with four runs, including a home run, to pull away and secure the win .

With the split, LMU remains in position in the WCC race as both teams prepare for a decisive Game 3.

The Lions and Gaels will square off one final time on Sunday, May 3, with first pitch set for 12:00 PM as LMU looks to claim the series.
