Seven-Run Fifth Fuels LMU Past Saint Mary’s, 11-5

MORAGA, Calif. - LMU softball opened its pivotal West Coast Conference series with a statement win on Friday afternoon, defeating first-place Saint Mary's, 11-5, at Cottrell Field. Entering the weekend trailing the Gaels by three games in the WCC standings, the victory pulls the Lions within two games of the conference lead while extending their winning streak to nine straight.

LMU (32-15) wasted no time setting the tone offensively, recording 14 hits in the contest. Meeya Johnson led the charge at the plate with a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored, consistently igniting the Lions' offense from the bottom of the lineup.

After Saint Mary's briefly took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, LMU responded with a decisive seven-run fifth inning that broke the game open. The highlight of the frame came from Sydney Poole, who delivered a clutch three-RBI double to left center, capping the rally and giving the Lions full control of the game.

Izzy Jamgotchian added another big moment late, launching a no-doubt two-run home run to left field in the seventh inning to extend LMU's lead and put the finishing touches on the win. She finished with two RBIs on the day.

Inside the circle, Savannah Hooks made a key impact in relief, earning the win after tossing 3.1 innings and helping stabilize the game following Saint Mary's fourth-inning push. Her outing proved critical in allowing LMU's offense the opportunity to surge ahead.

With the series-opening victory, LMU tightens the race at the top of the WCC standings. They will look to keep the momentum going in Game 2 of the series tomorrow, Saturday, May 2, with first pitch set for 1:00 PM.
