Late Rally Falls Short as Lions Drop Series Opener to San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - LMU softball dropped the opening game of their West Coast Conference series against San Diego on Thursday evening, falling 6-3 at Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

The Lions (23-14, 1-3 WCC) were held scoreless through the first five innings before mounting a late push, but a six-run third inning by the Toreros proved to be the difference.

LMU threatened early, putting runners on in multiple innings, including a leadoff single and stolen base from Avery Francis in the first. However, San Diego starter Kaitlyn Bartlow kept the Lions off the scoreboard through five innings despite steady traffic.

The game shifted in the bottom of the third, when San Diego capitalized on a combination of hits and an LMU error to plate six runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Taylor Johnson.

Despite the deficit, LMU continued to compete and broke through in the top of the sixth. Taelor Walker reached after being hit by a pitch, and Rubi Lopez followed with a walk to spark the rally. Justine Lambert laid down a bunt single, and the Lions capitalized on a San Diego error to get on the board. Meeya Johnson and Avery Francis each delivered RBI singles in the inning, cutting the deficit in half at 6-3.

LMU tallied eight hits in the contest, led by Lambert's perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Francis added two hits and an RBI, while Johnson also recorded a pair of hits and drove in a run.

In the circle, Lindsay O'Dell was charged with the loss after allowing five runs over 2.1 innings, while the bullpen of Sara Pinedo, Jessie Gilbert, and Angela Carrera combined to limit further damage and keep the Lions within striking distance.

LMU will look to bounce back as the series continues tomorrow, April 3rd, at 4:00 PM.
