Big Day from Jamgotchian, Strong Start from Carrera Not Enough in 3-2 Loss

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - LMU softball came up just short in a tightly contested battle on Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 to San Diego in game two of the West Coast Conference series at Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

In a game marked by momentum swings, the Lions (23-15, 1-4 WCC) controlled the early innings and carried a lead into the fifth before the Toreros rallied late.

LMU broke through in the third inning, manufacturing the game's first run as Meeya Johnson worked a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position. Izzy Jamgotchian delivered with a single up the middle to plate Johnson and give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.

The Lions continued to lean on a strong start from Angela Carrera, who kept San Diego off the scoreboard through four innings. The sophomore allowed just three hits while striking out three, helping LMU maintain control through the middle frames.

Jamgotchian provided another spark in the fifth, turning on a pitch and sending a solo home run to deep left field to extend the lead to 2-0. The senior catcher reached base in all three of her plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run, a single, a walk, and both LMU RBIs.

San Diego answered in the bottom half of the fifth, using a leadoff single followed by a run-scoring double to get on the board before adding back-to-back RBI singles to push across three runs and take a 3-2 lead.

Despite the shift, the Lions continued to battle down the stretch. Taelor Walker led off the sixth with a single to spark a potential rally, but the Toreros were able to hold on and close out the one-run game.

LMU will look to finish the series strong in the finale tomorrow, Saturday, April 4, with first pitch set for 1:00 PM.
