CLAREMONT, Calif. – #7 LMU women's water polo won all four games at this weekend's Convergence to move to 16-3 on the season and extend the team's win streak to double-digits. The Lions opened the day with a come-from-behind win over #T-14 Princeton, 10-8, before closing the event with a 16-7 win over LIU.
Game 1: #7 LMU 10, #T-14 Princeton 8
The Lions took an early 2-0 lead with powerplay goals from
Anna Tarantino and
Emison Styris. The Tigers responded with goals over the final 1:13 of the opening period to bring the score to 2-2 after one.
Princeton scored twice to open the second quarter to extend their run to four unanswered goals and take a two-goal lead.
Chelsea Isaac scored with 2:26 remaining in the first half to cut the deficit in half and make it a 4-3 game at intermission.
Back-to-back goals from Tarantino and
Cila David pushed the Lions ahead midway through the third quarter. Princeton retook the lead with a pair of goals less than a minute apart from each other. Entering the final minute of the quarter, Isaac tied the game with 56 seconds on the clock and
Brooke Tora Gil gave the lead back to the Lions with eight seconds left in the period.
A Princeton goal less than a minute into the fourth quarter tied the game at 7-7. Tarantino completed her hat trick with a go-ahead goal and
Noa Sasover doubled the lead to 9-7 with less than four minutes to play. The Tigers pulled back within one with 3:29 to play. The LMU defense successfully defended two attacks coming out Princeton timeouts on back-to-back possessions with less than a minute and a half remaining in the game. A final second goal from Styris secured victory for the Lions with the two-goal win.
Madison Searle made six saves over her 32 minutes in the cage.
Game 2: #7 LMU 16, LIU 7
Brooke Tora Gil and
Anna Tarantino gave LMU an early 2-0 lead which stood until Long Island's first goal over six minutes into the game. The two teams scored on three consecutive possessions as
Noa Sasover scored for the Lions, followed by a Sharks goal, then a goal from
Cianne Benjamin.
Chelsea Isaac added a final possession goal by converting the powerplay with 23 seconds remaining in the period to bring the lead to 5-2.
It was a back-and-forth second quarter as LIU scored first,
Chelsea Isaac responded for the Lions, the Sharks added another, and
Noa Sasover closed out the half with a goal in the final minute.
Benjamin extended the lead to four with her goal in the opening minute of the second half. After LIU got one back, Benjamin started a run of three consecutive goals as
Emison Styris and
Cila David followed before the Sharks ended the run.
Carolina Magano scored three times over the final two minutes of the quarter to push it to a 14-7 game.
Goals from David and Benjamin were the only scoring action of the final period to secure the 16-7 win for the Lions.
LMU shot 57.1 percent in the game, converting 16 of 28 shots for goals. The Lions did not earn an exclusion at all in the game.
