Lions Show Fight in Vegas, Look to Bounce Back in UNLV Rematch

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Loyola Marymount softball battled throughout a full day of action Friday at Eller Media Stadium but came up just short in both contests, falling 4-2 to Utah Tech before dropping a tightly contested 3-1 decision to host UNLV.

Game 1: Utah Tech 4, LMU 2
Utah Tech struck early, capitalizing on a first-inning opportunity to push across two runs and take the initial lead. The Lions quickly settled in and began generating offense of their own, consistently putting pressure on the Trailblazers' pitching staff.

LMU got on the board in the second inning when Justine Lambert reached and came around to score on an RBI single from Mya Allen, trimming the deficit to 2-1. The Lions continued to build momentum in the third, manufacturing the tying run as Rubi Lopez moved into scoring position before Sakora Harvell delivered an RBI single to even the game at 2-2.

The Lions kept the bats active throughout the contest, finishing with nine hits, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance from Allen and two hits from Lambert. However, Utah Tech regained the lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a pair of runs that ultimately proved to be the difference.

In the circle, Jessie Gilbert battled through the early innings, striking out six, before Lindsay O'Dell came in to steady things in relief. O'Dell held Utah Tech to just one hit over the final 3.1 innings to keep LMU within striking distance.

Despite multiple opportunities and continued pressure at the plate, the Lions were unable to break through late as Utah Tech held on for the 4-2 win.

Game 2: UNLV 3, LMU 1
The Lions returned to the field in the afternoon to face host UNLV in another tightly contested matchup that remained within reach throughout.

LMU broke through first in the third inning. Avery Francis reached base and later came around to score when Scarlett Carlson produced an RBI groundout, giving the Lions a 1-0 advantage.

UNLV responded in the bottom half of the inning to even the score before using timely hits to take the lead in the fourth and add another run in the fifth. The Rebels finished with 11 hits, but LMU's pitching staff limited several scoring chances to keep the game close heading into the late innings.

Francis paced the Lions offensively, going 2-for-2 with a walk and the team's lone run, while Sydney Poole and Justine Lambert also recorded hits.

In the circle, Sara Pinedo got the start and struck out four across four innings before Lindsay O'Dell returned in relief. The Lions remained within striking distance but were unable to generate the late rally as UNLV held on for the 3-1 decision.

Up next, the Lions will look to bounce back and close the weekend strong when the Lions face UNLV once again on Sunday at 12:00 PM to wrap up their Las Vegas trip.
