Eight-Run Extra-Inning Outburst Powers LMU Past North Dakota State, Caps Friday Sweep

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Loyola Marymount softball put together a complete day on Friday at Eller Media Stadium, earning a pair of victories with a 3-1 win over Utah Tech before erupting for a 13-6 extra-inning triumph against North Dakota State to start off their weekend in Las Vegas.

Game 1: LMU 3, Utah Tech 1
The Lions opened the day in a tightly contested pitching battle, using timely offense and dominant work in the circle to secure a 3-1 victory over Utah Tech.

LMU wasted little time applying pressure. Avery Francis reached base to begin the game and immediately created chaos on the basepaths, swiping second before advancing to third on a throwing error. Moments later, another Utah Tech miscue allowed Francis to come home and give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.

The Lions added to their advantage in the third inning when Sydney Poole worked her way aboard and Mina Lei Tala delivered with a clutch double down the right-field line, driving Poole in to extend the LMU lead to 2-0.

LMU added an insurance run in the fifth when Izzy Jamgotchian launched a solo home run to right field, her first of the day, pushing the Lions ahead 3-0 and providing valuable breathing room.

In the circle, Angela Carrera was sharp from the start, tossing four scoreless innings while striking out five and limiting Utah Tech to just three hits to earn the win. Sara Pinedo worked through the fifth inning before Lindsay O'Dell delivered a dominant finish, striking out five over the final two innings to collect her third save of the season.

Offensively, Francis, Jamgotchian, Poole, Tala, and Taelor Walker each recorded hits, while Francis' two stolen bases helped keep constant pressure on the Trailblazers' defense.

Game 2: LMU 13, North Dakota State 6 (8 innings)
The second game of the day turned into an offensive showcase, with the Lions tallying 13 hits and scoring 13 runs in an extra-inning victory over North Dakota State.

LMU struck first in the second inning when Justine Lambert came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Francis, giving the Lions an early 1-0 advantage. North Dakota State managed to even the score in the fourth, but the Lions answered in the sixth inning with a momentum-shifting three-run surge.

Analiah Lummus drove in the go-ahead run before Cristina Jones followed with a run-scoring double, and Jamgotchian added a sacrifice fly to cap the rally and give LMU a 4-1 lead.

Jamgotchian continued to be a constant threat at the plate throughout the game. The Lions' slugger narrowly missed adding to her home run total twice, sending two towering drives deep to the outfield that just missed clearing the fence, keeping the Bison defense on edge every time she stepped into the batter's box.

North Dakota State mounted a late push in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.

But the Lions wasted no time reclaiming control in the eighth. LMU erupted for eight runs in a massive offensive outburst that broke the game wide open. Scarlett Carlson delivered a key two-run single to spark the rally, Sakora Harvell followed with a two-run hit of her own, and the Lions capitalized on defensive miscues to pile on runs and take a commanding lead.

Harvell paced the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Carlson and Jones each drove in multiple runs. Francis added two hits and an RBI, and the Lions showed patience at the plate by drawing nine walks to continually pressure the Bison pitching staff.

Sara Pinedo ultimately earned the win in relief, shutting down the final innings to secure the Lions' second victory of the day.
